Myanmar court to hear appeal of democracy leader

Myanmar’s Supreme Court has refused to hear an appeal by democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi against her house arrest. The opposition leader’s term of house arrest is scheduled to expire on Saturday, but she had hoped to make a legal point that her detention was not justified. She was convicted last year of violating the terms of an earlier house arrest order when she gave shelter to an American man who swam to her lakeside Yangon home uninvited. She was sentenced to three years of hard labour, but regime leader General Than Shwe commuted the sentence to an additional 18 months of house arrest.Meanwhile Lawyers for Aung San Suu Kyi said they still have not been told whether she will be released on Saturday when her term runs out.
