Myanmar: Aung San Suu Kyi, Australian economist sentenced for 3 years

Myanmar's deposed State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi and her former economic adviser Australian Sean Turnell have been sentenced to 3 years jail term by a court. News agency Reuters said this today quoting a source. Both have been charged with the violation of the official secrets act which carries a maximum jail sentence of 14 years.
''
''The source told Reuters that they will be jailed for three years without a hard labour.
''
''With this sentence, Aung San Suu Kyi has now been given 20 years in jail for various charges.
''
''Sean Turnell is an economist at the Macquarie University at Sydney in Australia. He served as Special Economic consultant to Aung San Suu Kyi and Senior economic adviser to the minister of planning, finance and industry. He has been under detention since the military deposed the civilian government led by Aung San Suu Kyi in 2021.
''
''In August, during a meeting with military ruler General Min Aung Hlaing, UN Special Envoy on Myanmar Noeleen Heyzer had appealed for Turnell's release.
''
''The military government had responded that developments in Turnell's case would depend upon Australia's own engagement with the military regime. It had said that evidence shows severe penalties could be imposed against Sean Turnell.
''
''The 77 year old Nobel Peace prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi is facing at least 18 cases under the military government of Myanmar which took power in February last year immediately after her party National League for Democracy (NLD) swept the national elections in the country.
''
''Suu Kyi faces charges from graft to fraud and violation of electoral rules, to illegal import of communication equipment among others.
