Muzaffarnagar riots panel report: BJP demands CBI probe

BJP has termed the judicial commission's report on Muzaffarnagar riots as an attempt to cover up the role of the Uttar Pradesh government in the incident. The party also demanded a CBI probe into riots. BJP Secretary Shrikant Sharma alleged that the Samajwadi Party government is the main culprit and riots were triggered by its leaders for vote bank politics.

He said if the state government had taken effective action against the accused involved in killing two youths, then violence would not have erupted. Mr. Sharma also alleged that UP Minister Azam Khan used his political clout for securing the release of the people responsible for killing youths which caused unrest and violence.

The one-man judicial commission of inquiry that went into the 2013 Muzaffarnagar communal riots had concluded that intelligence failure and laxity on the part of police led to the violence. The Commission also accused the media of putting out exaggerated reports and spreading rumors that fueled violence.
