The Maldives United Opposition (MUO) has condemned the government's alleged attempts to destroy the political party system in Maldives through coercing sections of the judiciary to incriminate opposition leaders. In a press statement today, the opposition expressed alarm over the government's move to reintroduce death penalty and meting out prison terms against political opponents.

It said that Maldives United Opposition, MOU will keep moving forward to oust President Yameen and form an interim Unity Government to ensure free fair, transparent, credible and inclusive elections in 2018. The MUO is led by former President Mohammed Nasheed and a faction of ruling People's Party of Maldives led by former dictator Abdullah Gayoom.

Maldives government had quit the membership of Commonwealth last week after the latter alleged the government of human rights violations and curbing media freedoms. Maldives government has recently announced terrorism charges against Deputy Leader of the MUO and Chairperson of the Maldivian Democratic Party Mr. Ali Waheed and initiated court proceedings against faction led by Abdullah Gayoom.

Mr. Waheed along with Mohammed Nasheed are in exile in UK after an internationally-backed deal.
