After three days of incessant heavy downpour, rain has finally stopped in Mumbai and its suburbs. Mumbaikars are experiencing bright sunny day now. Both the road and rail services which were affected yesterday are now running normally. According to the Met department, in the last 27 hours ending at 11.30 am, the Colaba Station of South Mumbai recorded 116.8mm of rainfall while the suburban Santacruz station has recorded 81.4mm of rainfall. This monsoon, South Mumbai recorded its highest rainfall in 50 years. Santacruz, too, is on track to break its 50-year record. While the rain has been incessant for the last three days, weathermen have predicted a lower intensity today. Dr. R.V. Sharma, deputy director-general (western region) of India Meteorological Department said the low pressure area in Madhya Pradesh moved to the western part of the state and Rajasthan. So, it will rain less. Dr. Sharma said a combination of normal monsoon features, such as low-pressure areas over the Bay of Bengal and strong wind pressure over the west coast, is responsible for the record rainfall. Life is normal elsewhere in Maharashtra.AIR correspondent Sweety Kothari reports that it seems like rain god has finally answered the prayers of Mumbaikars as the city is experiencing a bright sunny day today after three days of incessant heavy downpour. Parts of the city and suburbs witnessed continuous downpour early this morning but now the rain has taken a break. Both the road and rail services which were affected yesterday are now running normally. Life is also normal elsewhere in Maharashtra. This monsoon, South Mumbai recorded its highest rainfall in 50 years. Since June 1 till yesterday, Colaba received 3,004.60 mm of rainfall, breaking the record of 2,679 mm set in 1983. According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, in the last 24 hours ending at 8.30 this morning, the city has recorded average rainfall of 95.79mm, eastern suburbs 106.38mm and western suburbs 67.96mm. While the rain has been incessant for the last three days, weathermen have predicted a lower intensity today. Meanwhile another good news for Mumbaikars is that out of the six lakes which supply water to the city, four lakes have filled to their capacity.
