Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan has ordered a probe by the Crime Branch into yesterday's Mumbai violence that claimed two lives and injured 55 others. Among those injured are policemen and some media persons. Mr Chavan said, the Police used lathi-charge, tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the violent crowd and had to resort to firing to control the situation. The Chief Minister said, the Crime Branch has already begun probing the incident.
Hundreds of people had gathered at Azad Maidan Ground, in south Mumbai to denounce the riots in Assam and also alleged attacks on the minority community in Myanmar.
The protesters suddenly turned unruly and set vehicles of the media and the police on fire, damaged buses and indulged in stone-pelting.
Condemning the violence in Mumbai, the Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde has warned of strong action against rumour mongers and appealed to the people to maintain peace.
Mr Shinde offered full cooperation to the Maharashtra government in dealing with any situation arising out of the violent incident.
