Mumbai terror attack is expected to top the agenda of the talks between the External Affairs Minister Mr. S.M. Krishana and his Pakistani counterpart Shah Mehmoood Qureshi in New York tonight.
During the first high level meeting since the Prime Ministers of the two countries met in Sharm el Sheikh , Mr Krishna is expected to emphasise the need for Pakistan to act speedily against those responsible for the Mumbai attack including its master mind Hafiz Saeed. The issue was discussed at the meeting the Foreign Secretary Ms Nirupama Rao had with Pakistan Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir .
Earlier in a strong message to Pakistan , the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh said that Islamabad must stop state-sponsored terrorism if they want to normalise relations with India. He said that the Pakistan should give up its old attitude regarding the use of terror as an instrument of state policy.
AIR correspondent says, in the light of the statements made by the two countries no break through is expected from the talks.
Reports from New York say, Pakistan has been told by US and its allies that it can no longer afford to have two different standards for terrorists, one for those targetting the West and another for the terrorists who use Pakistani soil against India.
AIR correspondent Sarita Brara reports from New Delhi that It is almost a year since terror attack on Mumbai took place but far from taking any action against the perptraters of the attack including its master mind Hafiz Saeed , even the trial is yet to open in Pakistan .Except for indulging in legal rigmarole , Pakistan , New Delhi feels has done nothing to speed up the investigation despite concrete evidence and material provided by India . And surely this will be the focal point of today's discussions as far as India is concerned . In a strong message ahead of the talks the Prime Minister too had said that Paksitan must stop the use of terror as an instrument of state policy . While Pakistan wants India not to hold back the ties on this single issue , the least New Delhi expects from Islamabad for any meaningful dialogue is concrete action against those responsible for the Mumbai attack that was hatched on its soil. But given Pakistani stance and inaction so far in this regard there is little one can expect from the talks .
