The government will make a statement on Monday on the gang rape of a photo-journalist in Mumbai.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kamal Nath informed the Lok Sabha on Saturday that the Centre has called for a report from the Maharashtra government on the incident.

Sharing the concern of the members, Nath said the House had passed a stringent law to curb such incidents.

Earlier members, cutting across party lines, expressed grave concern over the Mumbai episode.

They sought strong punishment for the accused to ensure the safety and security of the women in the country. The issue was raised during the Zero hour.

Meanwhile, a second accused in the brutal gangrape of a 23-year-old photojournalist has been arrested from south Mumbai on Saturday even as police launched a manhunt for three others in the case, which sparked a wave of protests.

The accused was picked up in the wee hours from Madanpura area by the Crime branch.

On Friday, an unemployed youth from south Mumbai was arrested in the case. He had named all the four co-accused out of which three are still at large.

According to Mumbai Police Commissioner Satyapal Singh, more than 20 teams, including 10 from the elite Crime Branch, have been formed to track down the perpetrators amid mounting public pressure and anger.
