Mumbai rape: accused are adults say police;SC calls for rehab policy for rape victims

Mumbai Police has said that all accused in the photojournalist gangrape case are adults. Mumbai Police Comissioner Satyapal Singh rejected claims of family members of two accused that they are juveniles. Mr Singh said proper chargesheet against all the accused will be filed accordingly. Our correspondent reports that Comissioner Satyapal Singh, speaking to the media in Mumbai today said that his force will take every step to ensure that the accused get maximum punishment and that too without much delay. He said three of the five arrested Chand Sattar, Vijay Jadhav and Mohammed Qasim have criminal records varying from theft to robbery. Singh said all the accused are adults. The police chief said that experts from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory and Gujarat Forensic Science Laboratory would assist the city police in looking for evidence against the accused.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has expressed anguish over the abysmal conviction rate in rape cases across the country. A bench comprising Justices RM Lodha and Madan B Lokur said that over 90 per cent of such cases end in acquittal. The court also ordered states to frame a rehabilitation policy for rape victims, if there is not one already.
