Maharashtra’s Home Minister R R Patil has said that the Mumbai Police will soon give up the police custody of cartoonist Aseem Trivedi. Mr. Patil informed reporters that since the investigation in the case is complete, there was no need to keep Trivedi under custody. He added that the legal procedure to release Trivedi has already begun and assured that Trivedi will be out soon.A Mumbai court had yesterday remanded Trivedi to police custody till 16th of this month. Mr Trivedi has been charged for sedition and also under the IT Act and the 1971 National Emblem Act. The police claimed that Mr Trivedi’s cartoons showed disrespect to Parliament. It further claimed had Trivedi had exhibited similar cartoons, allegedly mocking the constitution at a rally organized by ‘India Against Corruption’ at the MMRDA grounds in Mumbai in December 2011.Meanwhile, members of India Against Corruption today staged a protest outside the Bandra Police Station, where Mr. Trivedi has been kept in remand.
