Mumbai Police today invoked the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act, MCOCA, against all the eight accused arrested in connection with the murder of senior crime journalist Jyotirmoy Dey. This was confirmed by Joint Police Commissioner (Crime) Himanshu Roy. According to police, MCOCA provisions can be applied, if at least two members of an organised crime gang have at least two charge sheets registered against them. MCOCA will help police build up a stronger case. Under this act, statement of one accused can be held as evidence against another. Last week, police arrested gunman Satish Kalya and his associates Abhijeet Shinde, Arun Dake, Sachin Gaikwad, Anil Waghmode, Nilesh Shendge and Mangesh Agawane in connection with Dey's murder. Besides the seven, the police also arrested Vinod Asrani alias Vinod Chembur, a bookie-turned-builder who allegedly helped the shooters identify Dey. Asrani was arrested on July 3 and a local court on Thursday had extended his police custody till 13th of this month. They will be produced in the MCOCA court this afternoon. The veteran journalist J Dey was shot dead on 11th of June in Hiranandani area of suburban Powai.
