Nearly eight months after the gangrape of a telephone operator in the abandoned Shakti Mills compound in Mumbai, the Sessions Court today sentenced all the four convicts to life imprisonment. Meanwhile, the quantum of sentence in the photojournalist’s gangrape case will be announced on Monday.
Delivering a swift judgment in the twin Shakti Mills gangrape cases; Mumbai’s sessions court today awarded life sentence to four people convicted in the gangrape of a telephone operator. The court held that the brutal crime was part of a pre-meditated conspiracy. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 each on all the convicts and directed that the amount realized be given to the victim.
Since three of convicts were also involved in the photojournalist gangrape case, Special Public Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam today sought capital punishment for them. Mr. Nikam filed an application to frame additional charges on the three common convicts for repeated offence under section 376(e) of the IPC.
Accepting Nikam’s plea, the court adjourned the photojournalist gangrape case till Monday, when it will decide on the application and then proceed with the pronouncing of quantum of punishment.
