Mumbai court convicts four men in Shakti Mills gangrape case

A Mumbai court today found four men guilty of the gangrape of two women in the abandoned Shakti Mills compound in the heart of the city last year.

A 23-year-old photojournalist was allegedly gang-raped while she was on assignment at the deserted mill on August 22. All the four accused have been convicted. The fifth accused, a minor, is being tried in a juvenile court.

Days after their arrest, a telephone operator came forward revealing that three of the accused had also gangraped her on July 31. A 362-page charge sheet was filed against four of the accused in October. The accused, all unemployed young men, lived at a nearby slum.

The police say, forensic evidence, call data records and DNA reports were stacked against the four convicts. The quantum of punishment will be pronounced tomorrow.

During the trial, special prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam termed the incident as horrible, gruesome and merciless sexual assault.
