In Maharashtra, the polling for General Elections to the three Municipal Corporations in Vidarbha region was conducted in peaceful manner on Thursday. As per the preliminary estimates, around 55 to 60 per cent voting was registered during the civic body elections held in Nagpur, Amravati and Akola Municipal Corporation. No untoward incident has been reported as the police and other security agencies maintained a strict vigil.There are 2,604 candidates in the fray for total 304 seats belonging to the three Municipal Corporations, which include 724 candidates vying for 87 seats in Amravati and 598 candidates who are trying their luck for 73 seats in Akola Municipal Corporation.The total number of candidates in fray is 1, 229 and Mrs. Vishakha Maind of Bharatiya Janata Party has been elected unopposed being the only candidate with valid nomination from the seat reserved for Other Backward Class Women category. In all, 2, 487 polling centres were set up for this purpose, out of which 162 centres were sensitive in nature.The counting of votes for Municipal Corporation elections would be taken up simultaneously along with that of the Zilla Parishads and Panchayat Samitis on Friday morning.The electoral battle is mainly between ruling BJP-led Mahayuti with the Shivsena and Republican Party of India (Athawale Group) and the Congress and Nationalist Congress alliance garnering support from other splinter groups.
