The death toll in the building that collapsed in Bhiwandi in Thane district on Tuesday evening has risen to 8. Out of the 8 people who lost their lives 6 are women, a child and a man. 17 people have been injured after the building collapsed in the evening hours of Tuesday.AIR correspondent reports that two people are still in a critical condition and have been admitted to Lokmanya Tilak Hospital in Sion, Mumbai.5 others are admitted to the district Government hospital in Thane and 10 are admitted to Indira Gandhi Memorial hospital in Bhiwandi.Rescue operations by municipal workers and the police continued till 9 am today morning.The Municipal Commissioner of Thane, Achut Hange has declared a compensation and economic assistance of Rs. 50, 000 to the family members of the deceased. He said that the builder identified as Jagdish Pandu Lakshman was given permission to construct only ground plus one structure but the he had illegally added two more floors.In March 2011, the building was declared unsafe and the residents were asked to vacate immediately but they continued to live in the building in spite of warnings.
