Mulling the setting up of concurrent evaluation office to assess performance of rural devpt schemes:PM

The Government has exuded confidence that the to country will reach the high growth path of 7 to 8 per cent per annum in next 2 to 3 years. Replying to the debate on the Motion of Thanks on President's address to the Joint Sitting of both the Houses of Parliament in the Lok Sabha yesterday, the Prime Minsiter Dr. Manmohan Singh said that to achieve the high growth path, the Government has to increase the rate of investment, especially in infrastructure. Dr. Singh asserted that the Government's efforts will be to raise domestic savings, content of growth of subsidies and encourage private investment. The Prime Minister said, while the Government's aim is to achieve and average GDP growth of 8 per cent during the 12th plan and an agricultural growth of 4 per cent, the focus will continue to remain on inclusive growth.
On the issue of corruption in the implementation of MGNREGA scheme, Dr. Singh said that besides several measures already taken to check the menace, his government is also considering setting up of a concurrent evaluation office to evaluate the performance of various rural development schemes with a view to enable mid-course corrections. The Prime Minister said that his government is committed to work with states to ensure the highest level of transparency and accountability of the significant schemes.
