Mukul Sangma sworn in as new CM of Meghalaya

Congress leader Dr. Mukul Sangma was sworn in as the 22nd Chief Minister of Meghalaya on his 45th birthday today. <br/><br/>B M Lanong, an MLA of the United Democratic Party (UDP), a key ally of the Congress, was sworn in as Deputy chief minister.<br/><br/>J A Lyngdoh of the UDP and independent A T Mondol were also sworn in as ministers by State Governor R. S Mooshahary. Former State Chief Minister, D. D Lapang had resigned yesterday, following a month-long rebellion by a majority of the 28 Congress legislators in the state unit of the party.<br/><br/> The rebellion by Congress MLAs had peaked on the 17th of this month when Sangma and dissident Congress legislators rushed to New Delhi claiming that Lapang had lost majority. Earlier, 20 Congress MLAs in the 60-member House had met at Sangma's residence and pledged unconditional support to him.
