The people paid glowing tributes to the martyrs of Karbala and walked barefooted with Tazia processions. They observed matam by beating chest and reciting nauha. Majlis-e-Sham-e-Ghariban were held at various places in which the tragedy of Karbala was recited.
Elaborate security arrangements were made across the country for peaceful observance of the day.
In Jammu and Kashmir, Muharram was observed all over the state peacefully. Youm-E- Ashora was also observed across Ladakh region of the state. Hundreds of Shia muslims participated in the Zoljana Procession which was taken in Leh town.
In Kargil, people from all nearby villages reached Kargil in the form of mourning procession.
Various Religious Scholars threw light on the philosophy of Karbala and the importance of the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain.

In Uttar Pradesh, the Yaum-e-Ashura was observed today with solemnity and grief.
People thronged Karbalas to commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Husain, the grandson of Prophet Mohammad and his 72 companions. He was martyred by the forces of Yazid in Karbala in Iraq more than fourteen hundred years ago.
