Mudslides in China leave 127 dead, 2000 missing

In China, at least one hundred and twenty seven people were killed and two thousand missing after mudslides swept away homes and destroyed roads in northwestern China . This is nation's worst flooding in a decade. At least one village was buried entirely and deep rivers of sludge and rocks were hampering rescue efforts in the devastated region of Gansu province, where more than 45,000 people have been evacuated. Authorities have sent nearly 3,000 soldiers and about 100 medics to help in search and rescue efforts after the landslides in the remote ethnically Tibetan region, triggered by a deluge of rain late Saturday. Government said the landslides swept mud, houses, cars and other debris into a river running through the county, blocking the waterway and triggering flooding in the valley.More than 1300 police and soldiers have arrived to help with relief efforts in a district of north-west China hit by huge mudslides over the week-end. 3,000 others are on their way to assist survivors of the floods and landslides have killed more than 120 people in Gansu province. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has visited the county, where 127 people are known to have died. Almost 1,300 other people are missing in the wake of Saturday's landslides.
