The former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has denied charges against him on the opening day of his trial in Cairo. According to reports, he was wheeled on a hospital bed into a cage in the courtroom to the astonishment of onlookers gathered outside. Mr. Mubarak is being tried with his two sons, who also deny the charges. Ex-interior Minister Habib al-Adly and six other former officials are also being tried. The former President is charged with ordering the killing of anti-government protesters during the revolution that deposed him. Nearly 900 people were killed during the uprising. Mr. Mubarak is also charged with corruption, abuse of power and squandering public wealth. The former President faces a possible death sentence if convicted. Mr. Mubarak's trial comes nearly six months after he was toppled in an 18-day revolution calling for democratic reforms. The trial is being held at a police academy on the outskirts of Cairo. The 83-year-old has been living under house arrest at the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh with his family.
