The Maharashtra Government on Wednesday firmly stated that it would not allow the toxic waste from Bhopal's Union Carbide plant to be disposed of in Nagpur. Maharashtra’s Environment Minister, Sanjay Deotale informed the state assembly that the Madhya Pradesh government had not taken the mandatory No-Objection Certificate from Maharashtra Pollution Control Board to dispose off the waste in the state. He added that the state government would move the Supreme Court if the Jabalpur High Court dismisses its petition. Maharashtra’s Health Minister, Suresh Shetty informed the assembly that the state government was keen to implement the Pre-Conception and Pre-natal Diagnostic Techniques Act in “letter and spirit”. Minister of State for Health Fauzia Khan said the Government was considering making abortion legal before 12th week pregnancy since sex determination can be done between 12th and 20th week. The state government also agreed to have a judicial probe of the police firing in Jalna district on Monday. Two people were killed in the police firing to control the mob that had gathered after a truck ran down 12 warkaris. Meanwhile, Maharashtra’s Home Minister, R R Patil on Wednesday emphasized on the need for strong intelligence inputs. Addressing the members of the Maharashtra Legislative Council, Mr. Patil also spoke on the need for community policing. He also blamed Mumbai’s civic body of not being able to decongest the city. Mr. Patil also informed the state assembly the Central Government had sanctioned the proposal of buying 2,000 bullet-proof jackets and 10,000 SLR rifles for the state police. The Leader of Opposition Eknath Khadse charged that the government was deliberately neglecting the demands of banana growers in North Maharashtra. Relief and Rehabilitation Minister Patangrao Kadam said that the government will take a decision on compensation package to banana growers before the end of the monsoon session.
