Pakistan Peoples Party-led government has lost majority in Parliament as one of its key allies – MQM quit the coalition and decided to sit in the opposition. The MQM was the second largest party in the alliance with 25 lawmakers in the 342-member National Assembly. The MQM said they have resigned because of the administration's inability to curb rampant corruption and bring down inflation. The government has said that there is no threat to it and all major parties are working to strengthen democracy in the country. Relations between the PPP and MQM, which has its powerbase among Urdu-speaking people in Karachi, became strained after senior PPP leader and Sindh Home Minister Zulfiqar Mirza alleged that the MQM is behind ethnic violence in the city.
