MPs' salary hike: Govt assures LS to bring legislation

The government today assured the Lok Sabha that it will try to bring a legislation, in this session itself which will reflect the recommendations of the Joint Parliamentary Committee on the hike in the salaries of members of Parliament. The Leader of the House and Finance Minister, Mr Pranab Mukherjee said that the government is fully aware of the feelings of the members on the issue but the existing act on the salaries will have to be amended. Raising the matter, Mr Lalu Prasad of the RJD said that the salaries of the MPs are even less than Junior Clerks in the government after implementation of the Sixth Pay Commission recommendations. Justifying his argument, Mr Prasad said the MPs have to spend a lot of money on the people of their constituencies on hospitality, rail fares and medical treatment. Earlier, the Lok Sabha was adjourned till 2 PM and the question hour in the Rajya Sabha was disrupted after the members raised the issue. In the Lok Sabha, the issue was raised immediately after the question hour with RJD members supported by others seeking immediate hike in their salaries. This led to noisy scenes forcing the adjournment of the house.
