MP twin train derailment: Death toll mounts to 30; Several trains cancelled or diverted

In Madhya Pradesh, 30 passengers were killed and more than 50 injured after two trains derailed while crossing a swollen Machak river near Harda. Ten coaches of Kamayani Express and four coaches plus the engine of Janata Express were derailed late last night as the base material on the tracks got washed away in heavy rains.The mishap took place between Khirkiya and Bhirangi stations near Harda. <br/><br/>The rescue operation is underway. The accident relief train has reached the spot and several passengers have been brought to a nearby Harda and Itarsi stations. Railways established a helpdesk at Itarsi, Bina and Harda stations for the convenience of passengers and their families. Local administration and the state govt provide all possible assistance to the affected passengers. Railways sources said that it will take more than a week to restore the traffic on this route.<br/><br/><br/>President Pranab Mukherjee has condoled the loss of lives due to derailment of the Kamayani Express & Janata Express in Madhya Pradesh.<br/><br/>Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed deep sorrow over the train accident in Madhya Pradesh. In a tweet, Mr Modi said the two train accidents in Madhya Pradesh are deeply distressing. He also expressed condolences to families of deceased and prayed for the injured. The Prime Minister said, authorities are doing everything possible on the ground and the situation is being monitored very closely.<br/><br/>In a tweet, Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu said, an inquiry into the incident has been ordered and ex gratia will be paid immediately. Ministry of Railways has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh to the next of the kin of the deceased in Harda accident. It has also announced Rs 50,000 compensation to persons who are grievously injured.<br/><br/>Congress President Sonia Gandhi has expressed shock and grief over the unfortunate incident of twin rail accidents in Madhya Pradesh. Extending her condolences to the family of the deceased, Mrs Gandhi hoped that adequate relief and rescue measures are being undertaken by the authorities concerned.<br/><br/>Meanwhile, Railway has set up four helpline numbers to provide information to passengers. People can enquire about their passengers on the telephone number 09752460088 at Harda and 07580222052 at Bina. Information can also be had from – at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus 022-22694040, Lokmanya Tilak Terminus 022-25280005, Thane 022-25334840 and 0251-2311499 at Kalyan. Railway's helpline at Mirzapur is 05442-220095, for Allahabad 0532- 2408149, 2408128, and for Kanpur is 0512 -2323015, and 0512-2323016. <br/><br/>Due to the rail accident at Khandwa -Etarsi Rail section, the Railway has cancelled 18 trains and diverted several trains running from U.P region.<br/><br/>According to North Central Railway Spokesperson Bijay Kumar, 31 trains have been diverted due to Harda Rail accident, while 18 other trains have been cancelled so far on Mumbai-Howarah route. The North Eastern Railway zone had to divert several trains running from its region. According to North Eastern Railway Spokesperson at least 13 trains which had started their journey yesterday now running diverted routes. Most of the trains are running through Itarsi-Nagpur -Bhusawal rail route. Some of the trains are running through diverted routes are Gorakhpur -LTT Express, Dharbhanga -Lokmany Tilak Terminus (LTT) Express ,Pune -Lucknow Express ,LTT-Raxsol Express are running via Nagpur Rail Line covering Itarsi and Bhusawal railway stations.<br/><br/>While some other trains are running through Nagda Basai raod rail route. Five trains which stated their journey today for UP and Bihar regions have also been diverted. Three trains from Lokamnay Tilak Terminus to Lucknow,Gorakhpur and Muzaffarpur have been diverted mainly through Nagpur rail route. Mandudih-Pune Express is also running through Bhusawal-Nagpur route. While Pushpak Express from CST to Lucknow is running via Jalgaon-Surat-Nagda rail section.
