MP not to allow field trials of genetically modified crops

In Madhya Pradesh, now field trials of genetically modified (GM) crops will not be allowed. State’s Agriculture Minister, Ramkrishna Kusmaria announced this in a letter written to Union Environment and Forest Minister, Jairam Ramesh. Terming GM technique as harmful for human health and the environment, Mr. Ramkrishna Kusumaria said that the state would not allow any field trails of GM crops until the debate on the issue is settled for-ever. He also requested central government to reconsider the policy on GM at the national scale and declare a moratorium on all GM food crops. After Mr. Kusmaria’s announcement, the field trails of GM corn by the multi national company Monsento in the state will now be jeopardize. Several organizations were already protesting against this move. After Kerala, Madhya Pradesh is perhaps the second state in the country to prohibit the field trials of GM crops.
