MoU between Odisha Govt and Posco to be renewed by end June

The memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Odisha Government and South Korean steel major Posco for setting up of a 12 million tonnes per annum plant near Paradip of Jagatsinghpur district of Odisha will be renewed by the end of month. Odisha Industries, Steel and Mines Minister, Raghunath Mohanty, told media persons in Bhubaneswar on Wednesday that the MoU will be renewed with effect from 22nd of June last year when it had expired. He said the Odisha Government is seriously considering the proposal of Union Minister of Environment and Forests, Jairam Ramesh, to delete the clause on swapping of iron ores with Posco as agreed in the last agreement. The Odisha Industries Minister, however, made it clear that the land acquisition for the project will be carried forward peacefully and amiacably. Meanwhile, Posco Pratirodh Sangram Samiti, spearheading the anti-Posco agitation with the support of local villagers observed 'black day' today at Gobindpur in view of completion of six years of the signing of MoU. Many opposition party leaders from Congress, CPI, CPI (M), Forward Block, RJD, Samajwadi Party and NCP participated in the black day and criticised the Naveen Patnaik Government for forcefully acquiring farm lands for the project and demanded the shifting of the project. AIR correspondent reports that Black day was also observed in many parts of Odisha against the Posco project.
