Motormen call off strike after negotiation with state govt.

The motormen's strike in Mumbai has ended after negotiations with the Mahrashtra Government, bringing relief to lakhs of commuters. A statement issued by a Railway Spokesperson in New Delhi said that train services will be restored by this evening. Meanwhile, the Railway Board has regretted the inconvenience caused to the passengers due to strike.<br/> Earlier, Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan said, efforts are on to persuade the agitators to call off their stir. The Government held consultations with the railway unions and also toyed with the idea to invoke ESMA. To tide over the crisis, Maharashtra government has deployed 4,400 extra buses of BEST and MSRTC, but, they also proved to be insufficient. <br/> <br/>AIR correspondent reports that Mumbai was paralysed for second day today as the hunger strike of motormen crippled the city, resulting in huge traffic jams and forcing many to remain indoors. Railway authorities claimed only 20 per cent suburban trains were operating as a result of the stir by motormen demanding hike in pay scales and allowances. Earlier, 20 motormen, 10 each from Central and Western railways, were dismissed from service for refusing to join duty.<br/>
