MoS Defence to inaugurate tunnel in Sikkim

In a significant move with regard to development of border roads in Sikkim, the Union Minister of State for Defence and Chairman of Border Roads Development Board Dr MM Pallam Raju is going to inaugurate the newly constructed 60-metre-long Cut and Cover tunnel at Bardang, between Singtam and Rangpo, in East district in a short while from now.First of its kind in Sikkim and only second to be constructed in the country, this tunnel will mitigate the problems of frequent landslide at Bardang, faced by commuters on National Highway 31A, the life line of this landlocked border State.The Chief Engineer of the Project Swastik of the Border Roads Organisation, Brigadier Rajeev Sawhney told AIR Gangtok correspondent that the tunnel constructed at a cost of six crore seventy seven lakh rupees has been completed in a short time of eleven months.AIR correspondent says that during his three-day long visit, the Union Minister of State for Defence will also review the progress of works being undertaken by Project Swastik on NH 31A and Jawaharlal Nehru Marg.
