The funeral of the former Prime Minister Inder Kumar Gujral Gujral will be held at 3 this afternoon near Smriti Sthal in Delhi. His body is kept in state for the public to pay respects at his residence in Janpath central Delhi. The Government has declared a seven-day national mourning as a mark of respect to the departed leader. During this period, the national flag will be flown at half mast throughout India where it is regularly flown and there will be no official entertainment. It has been decided that the state funeral will be accorded to Gujral.
This was decided at a special Cabinet meeting convened by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to pay tribute to him. I.K Gujral passed away yesterday in Gurgaon near New Delhi after a prolonged illness. He was 92. The President, Vice President, Prime Minister, the UPA Chairperson and other senior political leaders have condoled Gujral's death.
Expressing deep shock, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in her condolence message described Mr. Gujral as a true friend of Bangladesh. She recalled the important role he played in the signing of the Ganges treaty between Dhaka and New Delhi.
Condoling the death, Pakistan Prime Minister Raja Parvez Ashraf said, Gujral had played an admirable role for bringing the two countries closer. In a message to his Indian counterpart Manmohan Singh, Ashraf described Gujral as a man of extraordinary abilities and a visionary leader. He said the region has lost a noble and distinguished politician.
