The mortal remain of former Lok Sabha Speaker and sitting Lok Sabha member P A Sangma was laid to rest today in Tura town, the District Headquarters of West Garo Hills District of Meghalaya. A pall gloom descended on Tura town, as thousands of tearful mourners bade farewell to one of their most illustrious leaders, who passed away of heart attack last Friday. <br/>Hundreds of vehicles drawn from the different parts of the state converged at deceased leader's residence at Wakbakgre locality for people from all walks of life to extend condolences and solace to the bereaved family, before his mortal remains were taken to nearby PM Stadium for the state funeral accorded in his honour. <br/><br/>Messages from the President of India, Pranab Mukherjee, Congress President, Sonia Gandhi, Catholic Bishops' Conference of India, Governor S.C. Jamir, Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh among other were read out on the occasion. Speaking at the state funeral function, Meghalaya Chief Minister, Dr. Mukul Sangma eulogized Purno A. Sangma as a great political personality, who was able to link the Meghalaya, North Eastern Region, and the country with the rest of the world. The Chief Minister termed him as a man of masses.
