Mormugao launched today at Mumbai's Mazgaon Dock

Indian Navy's second guided missile destroyer 'Mormugao', was launched today at Mumbai's Mazgaon Dock by Mrs. Reena Lanba, wife of Admiral Sunil Lanba, Chief of the Naval Staff, who was the Chief Guest on the occasion.

The ship will be fitted out and inducted into the Navy two years later.
The Project 15-B class guided missile destroyers are a continuation of the indigenously designed and highly successful lineage of Delhi and Kolkata class ships. The first ship of project 15B class destroyers was 'Visakhapatnam', which was launched on April 20 in 2015. Four others are being built at a cost of 29,700 crore rupees.

In his welcome address, Chairman and MD of Mazgaon Dock Ltd., Admiral R K Shrawat said that this ship is a shining example of Make in India Spirit. He added that the indigenization content of our projects has been rising significantly with each new project and is a matter of pride for all of us. He said the Defence PSU, DRDO needs to increase their productivity to match the Navy plans.

When asked by the media, if the time period taken for ship building in India be reduced, Admiral Sunil Lanba said anywhere in the world, the process from conceptualization till building of ship takes 10 to 12 years and in India too the ship building process takes the same time. He said we are trying to reduce it to six years with the help of proper planning and policies.

When asked about leaking of secret documents of India's scorpene submarine, the Admiral said the documents have not been leaked from India but from France Naval contractor DCNS. He said India has requested the French Government to investigate this incident with urgency and share their findings with the Indian side.

He also said that the detailed assessment of the potential impact of the leak is being undertaken by a high-level committee constituted by the Defence Ministry.

With displacement of 7,300 tonnes, the Mormugao spans 163 metres in length and is powered by 4 Ukrainian gas turbine engines to achieve speeds in excess of 30 knots, approximately 56 km per hour. With a complement of 50 officers and 250 sailors, the Project 15B destroyers are designed to operate 4,000 nautical miles at sea.

The Mormugao is armed with the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile, which can hit targets at land and at sea 300 km away. The key sensor of the Mormugao will be its Israeli-designed Multi-Function Surveillance Threat Alert Radar (MF-STAR), designed to track targets in the air hundreds of kilometres away.

Compared to the Navy's Project 15-A destroyers, which are now entering service, the Project 15B ships will be less detectable by radar.

In the last 6 years, the Indian Navy has inducted 8 frontline warships and has launched 5 warships which are in the process of being constructed.
