Power Minister Piyush Goyal today said that 15 states out of 29 have joined Ujwal Discom Assurance Yojna, UDAY. The scheme provides for the financial turnaround and revival of Power Distribution companies, DISCOMs and also ensures a sustainable permanent solution to the problem. Briefing media in New Delhi today, Mr Goyal said, four major states Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Odisha and Maharashtra have agreed to join the scheme today. The Minister said, within two months of announcement of UDAY more than half of the States of India are on board. <br/><br/>He said, the Centre is working with States, Public Sector Undertakings, private players to resolve the power sector issues.The Minister informed that top hundred thermal plants in the country have zero coal shortage and currently there is no thermal plant with critical coal stock. He said, on 29th of December, there was no shortage of power in the country and the price on the exchange on that day was Rs 2.35 per Unit. <br/><br/>UDAY envisages a significant state government support mainly in the form of taking over of 75 per cent of discom debt by the respective State Governments and reduction in interest rate for the balance 25 per cent of discom debt which may be issued in the form of discom bonds backed by State Government Guarantee.
