In Odisha, more than 20 lakh people in about 3500 villages have been badly affected in the current flood. As many as 19 of the 30 districts in the state have been hit by flood in Mahanadi river systems, Brahmani and Baitarani. As per the reports received from Odisha Government, so far there has been 17 human casualities, while the casualities are likely to be much more. Inadequate supply of relief materials and damage of roads in many flood-affected areas for supply of relief materials have left thousands of marooned people starved for last two days. Only four helicopters have been put on service for airdropping of food packets in affected areas of Kendrapara, Puri and Jagatsinghpur district. Though there has been substantial decerase in the inflow to the Hirakud reservoir and opening of only 16 gates, the grim flood situation is likely to remain till tomorrow as water evacuation into the Bay of Bengal has slowed down because of tidal conditons owing to full moon.Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik made an aerial survey of flood-affected areas in Sambalpur, Sonepur and Bolangir districts. Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee president Niranjan Patnaik, Leader of Oppositon Bhupinder Singh and other senior party leaders also made aerial survey of flood-affected areas in Sonepur, Sambalpur, Bargarh and Puri.
