Union Environment and forests Minister Mr Jairam Ramesh has said Moratorium on commercial cultivation of Bt Brinjal will continue till a consensus is reached among state government, scientific community and various stakeholders. Speaking to newsmen in Chennai yesterday, he asserted that he had only announced a moratorium and not a ban on genetically modified food crops. He said the moratorium should be used responsibly and creatively not only for Bt brinjal but also for genetically modified food crops. On the save tiger project, the Minister said extensive network of comprising of real estate and mining mafia have been responsible for the dwindling tiger population. To tackle this , Mr Jairam Ramesh said comprehensive amendments to the Wildlife Protection Act will be introduced in coming budget session of parliament to hand stern punishment to poachers. Earlier addressing the valedictory session of the International Conference on Biodiversity at the M .S. Swaminathan Research Foundation, the minister said that India is going to the Nagoya Biodiversity negotiations in October this year from a position of strength. He called for greater convergence between negotiations on climate change and Biodiversity.
