The Agriculture Minister Mr. Sharad Pawar today said the recent moratorium on the release of BT Brinjal by environment ministry must not be seen as a setback to the efforts of researches and other works in this regard. Speaking at a conference in New Delhi, Mr. Pawar said research efforts have to be doubled so that misconceptions should not remain in minds of policy makers regarding Genetically Modified crops. He said, the decision of environment ministry must be respected but efforts on BT Brinjal would continue. Environment Ministry’s Genetic Engineering Approval Committee recently said, BT Brinjal might not be allowed to go ahead until independent studies are able to establish its safety. In reply of a question, the minister said that to ensure food security, modernization of research and technology is necessary.
