The Deputy Chairman of Planning Commission Montek Singh Ahulawalia on Friday called for free movement of people across the borders, focus on labour, currency and removal of trade barriers to move towards realizing the goal of South Asian economic grouping. Addressing the first ever South Asian forum meeting in New Delhi today, he said that the region holds immense potential to emerge as an important grouping which will be beneficial for the region to realize its full economic potential and fully integrate it with the international market. Mr. Ahulawalia strongly called for removing the enhancing investment, better connectivity and increase in cultural exchanges to move forward towards this goal. He said security concerns have emerged as a major challenge in enhancing people to people contact and the growth of tourism has suffered due to this problem. Mr. Ahulawalia said, that the political and business leadership of the region will have to sit together to address this vexed issue to take the process forward. In her address, the Secretary General of SAARC Fathimath Dhiyana Saeed said that the SAARC nations have moved forward from declaration to implementation stage. She called for evolving better monitoring mechanisms for implementation of different programmes. Ministers and representatives besides captains of Industry from the SAARC nations are participating in the two day meeting jointly hosted by Government of India and FICCI. AIR correspondent reports that in the second fastest growing economic region, emergence of stronger institutions and greater decentralization are transforming the governance structures with democracy taking the root.
