Monsoon session of parliament ends today

Both Houses of Parliament have been adjourned sine die. In Lok Sabha, the Speaker, Mrs. Meira Kumar in her concluding remarks called upon the members to preserve the sanctity of Parliament. Describing the trend of disrupting the House as alarming, she said that if it is not checked, it will lead to unforeseen consequences. The Speaker regretted that about 45 hours of the House were lost due to interruptions and forced adjournments in the session and the question hour could not be taken on 11 days. Our AIR correspondent reports that 20 bills were passed by Lok Sabha in this session. They included the Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Bill, MP Salary Bill, the Personal Law Amendment Bill, the Indian Medical Council Bill, Educational Tribunal Bill and the bill providing for Voting Rights to NRIs. She also referred to various important debates and discussions including those on Bhopal Gas Leak Tragedy, Preparations for Commonwealth Games, Jammu and Kashmir situation, price rise, situation arising out of floods and drought and Honour killings. In his concluding remarks, the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha expressed concern over disruption in the House, particularly in the Question Hour. Expressing satisfactino at the impressive work transacted in the House during the session, Mohd. Hamid Ansari said that House could not do any business on five days and there were several disruptions and adjournments as a result of which question hours for eight days could not take place. He also proposed to start the proceedings in the House with the Zero Hour and later take up the question hour later in the day.
