Monsoon Session of Parliament begins today

The monsoon session of the Parliament will begin today. The Government has decided to introduce 32 new bills including the Lokpal Bill. Other important bills to be introduced include Land Acquisition Bill, Food Security Bill, the Benami Transactions Bill and the Mines and Minerals Bill. Talking to reporters in New Delhi yesterday, the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh said government is fully prepared to discuss all issues on the floor of the parliament .Dr. Singh said, Parliament is a sovereign body and it should be allowed to function and discharge its duty. The prime Minister said that the fate of the Lokpal bill will be decided by Parliament. He said, the decision not to bring the Prime Minister's office under the Lokpal has been taken after taking all factors into account. On the 2G, Dr. Singh said, that we should not pre-judge the issue as the matter is before the court. On Telengana MPs and MLAs resigning over the statehood demand, the Prime Minister hoped that the government would overcome the issue. Leader of the Opposition, Mrs. Sushma Swaraj told reporters after all party meeting convened by the Speaker Mrs. Meira Kumar that the party will take up the issues of internal security, Lok Pal and corruption during the session. The Opposition has planned to raise issues like inflation, Telangana, rail accidents and Maoist violence in the session. AIR correspondent reports that the monsoon session is likely to continue for about six weeks 32 new bills including the draft Lokpal, Land Acquisition, Food Security, the Benami Transactions and the Mines and Minerals are scheduled to be introduced in the session apart from discussion on major devolpments including India-Pakistan Foreign Minister level talks. The session is likely to continue for about six weeks. The fate women reservation bill is still not clear with no political concensus among the parties on the issue. Speaker convened two meetings on the bill already approved by the Rajya Sabha.The Opposition has planned to raise issues like inflation, Internal security, Telangana, rail accidents and Maoist violence in the session. With adament opposition, it remains to be seen how far the government achieves success in getting the legislations passed. Earlier the Prime Minister called on President Pratibha Devisingh Patil and apprised her about the forthcoming session and other national and international issues.
