Both the Houses of Parliament were adjourned till Tuesday on the opening day of the monsoon session after paying homage to the former Vice President Mr. Bhairon Singh Shekhawat and other sitting and former members of the two Houses, who died in the inter session period. Paying rich tributes to Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, the Lok Sabha Speaker Mrs. Meira Kumar described him as an astute administrator, a distinguished legislator and a committed votary of humanitarian values. The Chairman of Rajya Sabha Mohd. Hamid Ansari said that Shekhawat was an outstanding leader, eminent Parliamentarian, statesman and able administrator. Bhairon Singh Shekhawat passed on the 15th of May this year at Jaipur at the age of 87. Tributes were also paid to the sitting member in the Lok Sabha, Digvijay Singh and a former member Ram Sagar. In the Rajya Sabha, the members paid tributes to Virendra Bhatia, a sitting member and another former member, K A Krishna Swamy. The two houses also paid homage to the CRPF personnel and the villagers who were killed in Chhattisgarh in various incidents in Maoist violence. They condemned these dastardly attacks which Mrs. Meira Kumar said are aimed at disturbing peace and creating chaos in the country. Homage was also paid to the victims of the tragic aircrash of an Air India Express plane outside Manglore airport in Karnataka which 158 people were killed, the train accidents in which 148 people were killed after suspected Naxalites derailed the Mumbai bound Ganaishwari Express and an another rail accident at Santhia station in Bibhum district of West Bengal. The Lok Sabha also remembered martyrs of the Kargil war on the 11th anniversary today of the Indian victory in the conflict. Members in both the houses also stood in silence for a while as a mark of respect to the memory of departed before they were adjourned for the day. Earlier, in the Rajya Sabha, 52 new and re-elected members took oath of office. Prominent among those include, the Information and Broadcasting Minister, Mrs. Ambika Soni and the Commerce and Industry minister, Mr. Anand Sharma, the former BJP President, Mr. M Venkaiah Naidu, LJP Chief Mr. Ram Vilas Paswan, noted criminal lawyer, Mr Ram Jethmalani and well-known industrialist, Vijay Mallayya.
