Modi-Sharif meet: No breakthrough in India-Pak joint statement, says Cong

The Congress today said that there was no breakthrough in India-Pakistan joint statement which was issued after talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif at Ufa in Russia.

Senior party leader and former External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid told reporters in New Delhi that the Congress is not undermining government's ability to deal with Pakistan, but it wants to remind the Modi government to be vigilant. He said India, during the UPA regime, also tried peace talks with the neighbouring country but to no avail.

He said, Islamabad is not trustworthy. Mr Khurshid said, every time UPA government initiated peace talks, the then opposition BJP used to pressurize it not to go ahead. The spokesperson asked why the Prime Minister has changed his mind now even though the country witnessed shelling from the Pakistani side.

On China, Mr Khurshid said, India needs to improve relations with the country but it is not so easy. He questioned how India can expect help from China in the United Nations, when Beijing never accepted their Army's presence at Indian soil which occurred during Chinese President's visit to India last year.

On Prime Minister's visit to Jammu and Kashmir today, Mr Khurshid said, the BJP does not have any policy for the state. He said, it is highly unfortunate that during Mr Modi's stay in Jammu, Pakistan and ISIS flags are being raised in Srinagar.

On Department of Telecommunications report on Net Neutrality, Mr Khurshid said, the report is anti consumer. He said, distinctions have been made between domestic calling applications and international calling applications. He said, attempt to regulate the applications in a manner in which the government is trying to impose is not Net Neutrality.
