Modi did not appear before SIT in 2002 riots case

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi did not appear before the Special Investigation Team -SIT on Sunday. Mr. Modi was summoned by the SIT in connection with a Gulberg massacre of the 2002 Gujarat riots.<br/><br/>According to sources, the Chief Minister Narendra Modi is considering legal options- whether he needs to personally appear before the SIT or not. Special Investigation Team- headed by former CBI Director R. K. Raghavan had issued summons to Modi early this month in connection with the complaint filed by Mrs.Zakia Jafary- the widow of former Congress MP Ehsan Jafary who was killed in the Gulberg Housing society with 68 others.<br/><br/>The Congress has criticised Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi for not showing up before the SIT. Party spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi said in New Delhi that it was contemptuous and showed that Modi loves to hide.<br/><br/>He said the SIT's direction to Narendra Modi to appear before it shows the seriousness and importance attached to the issue by the apex court.<br/><br/>The BJP remains non-committal on whether Chief Minister Narendra Modi would depose before the Special Investigation Team. BJP spokesperson Rajiv Pratap Rudy told PTI that the government of Gujarat has made it clear that it shall act as per the law. He said the State government has always supported and respected the law and will abide by it.
