In Assam, moderate to heavy polling is reported in the second and final phase of Assembly elections for 64 Assembly constituencies on Monday. An estimated 50 to 55 per cent voters exercised their franchise when reports last came in.Additional Chief Electoral Officer of the State Mukesh Sahu told AIR Guwahati Correspondent that barring few minor incidents in some voting centres at Rangiya, Morigaon and Jaleswar, polling was by and large peaceful.Polling began in 12,589 voting centres amidst tight security at 7.00 this morning and will end at 3 PM on Monday.AIR correspondent, barring few minor incidents, polling is reported to be by and large peaceful in almost all the constituencies. Clashes between public and police have been reported in Udiana L.P.School voting centre in Rangiya constituency. Police had to resort to fire in the air to control an irate mob involved in damaging police vehicles.The situation was later brought under control and polling began. At Jaleswar constituency in Goalpara district, police had to open fire to control the situation when two political groups involved in clashes.Similar incident has also been reported in Morigaon constituency. Several persons reportedly injured in the incidents. In South Salmara constituency, one presiding officer had to be removed by the election authority following complaints of partiality.The voters of Bamunjhora village in Darang district remained absent in the polling centre protesting against inclusion of the area in Bodoland Territorial Council. The villagers also blocked the road by felling trees to stop movement of poll officials.In the insurgency-hit Bodoland Territorial Council districts, the polling is reported to be going on smoothly and peacefully. Voters are coming out to exercise their rights defying the threat of militants.In today’s polling, over 96 lakh voters in 14 lower and central Assam districts will decide the electoral fortune of 496 candidates, including 47 women.Political stalwarts whose electoral fortune will be sealed in EVMs include nine sitting Ministers, two former Chief Ministers- Prafulla Kumar Mahanta and Dr. Bhumidhar Barman besides the president of main opposition party the Asom Gana Parishad Chandra Mohan Patowary.The ruling Congress has put up candidates in all the 64 constituencies. BJP and Asom Gana Parishad are contesting 58 and 53 seats respectively.AIUDF and Bodoland Peoples Front have also fielded their candidates in 59 and 26 seats respectively. There are altogether 110 Independents in the fray.
