In Tamil Nadu, revenue authorities carried out an exercise to test communication channels in coastal districts as part of a mock tsunami drill across several countries in the Indian Ocean region. Kodiakarai Naval detachment conducted the mock tsunami drill at Vedaranyam in Nagapattinam district.Another operation was executed at Tuticorin as per the directive of Coast Guard, Regional Headquarters, Chennai.The drill declared as a table top exercise seeks to place a contingency plan in the event of a disaster of a higher magnitude and take back lessons to the table to reassess and reduce the gaps in preparedness.As the model code of conduct was in place, the exercise was done at a smaller level.The naval authorities demonstrated the use of life jackets and ascertained the availability of food rations, captive power and functionality of generators, life jackets and medical kits were also ascertained.The fishermen were also instructed to push the boat into the sea during Tsunami.A very high frequency communication device of the Navy was also demonstrated.Nagapattinam district was one of the worst affected districts and 6050 were killed more than 12000 cattle were destroyed and more than 5 thousand lost their hands or legs during Tsunami in 2004.
