The Centre today said that it is committed to provide easy and affordable access to telephone, broadband and postal connectivity to the people in the North East. Minister of State for Communication and Information Technology, Mr. Sachin Pilot said this after reviewing the performance of BSNL and the departments of Information Technology and posts in the north east region in Mizoram on Thursday. Mr. Pilot also inaugurated a mobile switching centre and BSNL’s EVDO and WI MAX service, for better connectivity. He also assured the state government of all possible assistance to implement IT-related projects. According to an official release, satellite phones are also being provided for remote villages where connectivity by conventional means is not feasible. 795 such digital satellite phones are already operational, 1097 additional satellite phones will be installed in the current financial year.
