Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MNREGA) in Madhya Pradesh has proved very beneficial for the poor people in rural areas. So far over 40 lakh people have been benefited by the scheme.AIR correspondent reports, more than one crore job cards have been issued to the needy people under the scheme. A happy feature of the scheme is that a large number of women are engaged in the construction works being taken up under the scheme. According to government sources, so far works worth more than 18 thousand crore rupees have been completed to the benefit of the rural population. What is more gratifying is the fact that the government agencies are all alert about the corrupt practices in implementing the scheme. As a result two collectors, six chief executive officers of district panchayats and 109 chief executive officers of janpad panchayats have been taken to task while punitive actions have initiated against 723 panchayat sarpanchs 908 panchayat secretaries. In addition, care is being taken to keep eye on the expenses of the scheme also. The government sources claim to have brought down the administrative expenses to the tune of three percent with the result that an amount of about 270 crore rupees has been saved. The scheme is said to be successful not from the angle of providing employment to the needy people but also in raising the development level of the village areas.
