Fishery is a sustainable livelihood, which supports about 60 million people of our country. It has notable contributions to GDP, foreign exchange earnings and certainly food and nutritional security to the people of our country.<br />'' <br />''Mizoram has a dearth of flat lands to develop adequate number of water areas for pisciculture, but the state is still a resourceful state in fisheries because the state is having large freshwater resources. In recent times, the state is witnessing an enormous growth in pisciculture or fisheries. Also, the state has a very high potential for improvement in fish production.<br />'' <br />''Mizoram, which is endowed with 22 rivers along with hundreds of tributaries, has 24 thousand hectare area suitable for fish culture. Of this, about 14 thousand 500 hectare area is open water resources. Further, fish culture is being made in 600 hectare. According to the officials, the total aquaculture production found a growth rate around 10% in recent years. Yet, it needs more development as the state falls short of fish seeds, due to inadequate number of hatcheries.<br />'' <br />''Talking to AIR News, the Director of Fisheries Mr Vanlallawma said that the state has Govt owned three hatchery units and 14 private units. As these are inadequate to meet the demand, the state government has planned to build up more hatcheries.<br />'' <br />''Most recently, a modern hatchery unit has come up at Little Galilee in Kolasib district. Director Vanlallawma said that the production of fish spawn in the unit is estimated at 200 lakhs annually. In it, apart from Catla, Rohu and Mrigal variety, common carp, grass carp, silver carp and Tor Pitora have been bred successfully.<br />'' <br />''For further development and self-sufficiency in pisciculture and to enrich the rural economy, the fisheries department has taken up many initiatives under the Blue Revolution program, Rastriya Krishi Vikas Yojana and Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana. And certainly, all these are showing a catalytic role for expansion of culture and also towards diversification in fish farming in the state. <br />
