Mizoram Governor Kamla Beniwal sacked; Manipur Governor V.K Duggal given additional charge

Ms. Kamla Beniwal has been sacked as governor of Mizoram, just two months before her tenure comes to an end.

A Rashtrapati Bhavan communique said, Manipur Governor V K Duggal has been asked to discharge the functions of the governor of Mizoram until regular arrangements are made.

Ms. Beniwal is the second governor to be sacked after the removal of Puducherry Lt Governor Virendra Kataria.

Soon after the NDA government assumed office at the Centre, some governors appointed by the previous UPA government were asked to resign. But some of them refused to do so.

Last month, Ms Beniwal was shifted from Gujarat to Mizoram as Governor. She battled with the Gujarat government, when Mr Narendra Modi was its chief minister, over the appointment of Lokayukta and some legislations during her stint there.

Sources said, the Union Home Ministry had sent a detailed reference to the President for Ms. Beniwal’s removal citing that she is facing land-grabbing charges in her home state Rajasthan.

The ministry initiated the process for her removal after receiving a report from the Rajasthan government. The alleged land-grabbing issue was raised by the BJP in Parliament during the UPA regime.
