Mitchell secures no deal on resuming Israel-Palestine peace-talks

US Mid-east envoy George Mitchell appeared to have failed to bridge wide gaps between Israelis and Palestinians on the terms of renewing peace talks. The former senator shuttled between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas and other regional leaders during the week. After talks between Mitchell and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in the occupied West Bank today the Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erakat told reporters that Mitchell informed that he did not reach an agreement with the Israelis on freezing settlements. US envoy was trying to persuade Israel to agree to a freeze in settlement activities in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. So far, Netanyahu has only agreed to a partial cessation. Palestinians say they are ready to resume peace talks with Israel if the Jewish state stops settlement construction in the West Bank. During his visit to Middle East, George Mitchell visited Egypt and Ramallah apart from Jordan and Lebanon to convince various stakeholders on the pressing need of talks.
