The Red Cross Society of India will campaign in West Bengal, like other States to stop the misuse of the ‘Red Cross’ symbol. The Chairman of the West Bengal Circle of Red Cross Mr. Nikhilesh Das said in a press conference in Kolkata today that according to the 1960’s Geneva Convention, apart from ‘International Red Cross’ only Army Medical Corps can use the Red Cross Symbol. He said the Red Cross Symbol is now being improperly used by many private and public bodies. Mr. Das said although there is a provision of a fine upto 500 hundred rupees for the misuse, the organization is not being able to take this due to lack of public awareness.
