Indian High Commission in Maldives on Monday denied that its premises is being used by the former president Nasheed to hold political meetings.
Issuing a statement on Monday, the High Commission said that no political meetings and activities have been allowed in the mission premises during the presence of former President. Only limited visitors are allowed to meet the former President on strict need basis.
Nasheed had sought refuge in the mission last Wednesday, fearing arrest by the local police. His party, Madivian Democratic Party, has since announced that Nasheed is likely to be arrested if he leaves the premises, and would come out only if the case against him is withdrawn.
Indian High Commissioner was summoned to the Maldivian Foreign Office yesterday, and according to the President Waheed’s office, a protest note was given to the High Commissioner for letting Nasheed use the mission for political activities.Meanwhile, police spokesman in Male, Hassan Haneef, told the media today that arrest warrant has been reissued by the court against Nasheed. The new warrant calls for police to arrest Nasheed and produce him in court on Wednesday.
